Richard Spanton Jr and his wife, Chrissie, are not just into providing a luxury atmosphere for their guests at Copperstone Inn, they are also committed to the environment. In 2006 when the Spantons embarked on this wonderful renovation, they decided they would like to be as environmentally friendly during the rebuilding process as possible. The Spantons made sure that over 80% of all materials were bought or manufactured locally. Everything from the limestone to the woodwork, cabinets, and flooring in the home is from within 50 miles away. This not only helped the local economy, it also saved fuel and exhaust from long distance trucking. They purchased all new double pane, insulated windows with extra tight seals that help keep energy use to a minimum.
The Spantons did not stop there. They decided to use blown-in insulation and 2 X 6” construction framing. JM Spider Custom Insulation is a professionally installed spray-in fiber glass insulation system. It fills framing cavities completely, leaving no gaps or voids. This complete coverage results in superior thermal performance and sound control. The system uses fiber glass with 25% recycled content and is protected against mold growth with an EPA-registered mold and mildew inhibitor. JM Spider is part of Johns Manville’s complete line of Formaldehyde-free™ fiber glass building insulation. It improves indoor air quality because it’s made without formaldehyde. Ultimately the home is safer, much more insulated and also very energy efficient.
All of the paint used in Copperstone Inn is non-toxic and low VOC. The lights are powered by low-energy use CFL light bulbs, some of which have a life span of 9 years.
The Spantons also went above and beyond by installing a corn burner manufactured in Denmark to heat the entire 9000 square foot home in the winter and heat the hot water during the summer. The corn is grown and harvested on the farm so it does not have to travel far prior to being used for energy. They also installed radiant heat in the basement which keeps it cozy and energy efficient as well!
At Copperstone Inn, they use only certified organic pesticides and fertilizers in their landscaping and lawn.
The Spantons are also very cautious in the kitchen, baths and laundry rooms. All of the cleaning and laundry soaps are environmentally friendly products. Most or all of the food served is organic or locally grown depending on the season, and all of the soaps, shampoos and lotions offered in the guest rooms are eco-friendly.
The Spantons believe in sustainability, and along with the future organic apple orchard, Farm Market and planned solar project, they someday hope to be self sufficient on the property. Come share in the beauty of nature at Copperstone Inn; relax and rejuvenate.
